The following sections details the expectations and responsibilities for mentors.
Mentor Expectations
- Knowledge of the tech industry and familiarity with curriculum topics, specifically:
- Experience working with APIs and reading documentation
- Experience with Azure Portal and Visual Code Azure extension
- Knowledge of Azure use cases (i.e., Function Apps, Logic Apps, etc.)
- Grasp of web dev concepts (frontend, backend)
- Experience with NodeJS, HTML/CSS, NoSQL
- Able to commit 1-3 hours/week (at least 30 min - 1 hour per student)
- Meetings tend to be shorter in the beginning when students are learning basic topics and longer towards the end as they work on their own final projects
- Excitement about the tech industry, software engineering, and serverless technology!
- Eagerness to help future engineers
Mentor Responsibilities
- Weekly 1:1 video meetings with your student(s) throughout the 8-week program (see Mentor Meetings link on course homepage for meeting guidelines & further details) with the purpose of:
- Developing relationships with student mentee(s)
- Assisting them in understanding concepts taught
- Guiding them in building their final projects
- Check in with student(s) between meetings to see if they need help and to make sure they're on track
- Fill out short surveys after each week's mentoring session(s)
- Provide Bit Project team with feedback during and after the program
- Check Slack and email daily
- Use Slack to communicate with your student(s), course instructors, and other Bit Project staff members
- Important weekly updates will be sent in Slack and over email
